OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Responds to Ghibli Images Backlash

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has defended the societal value of AI-generated art after a growing discussion over the viral “Ghibli-style” trend powered by OpenAI’s latest image generation tools.

In a YouTube podcast hosted by an Indian entrepreneur, Varun Mayya, Sam Altman admitted the complexities around AI’s impact on creative fields. However, he mentioned that the democratization of content creation remains “a big net win for society.”

His comments come as Studio Ghibli fans and artists voice concern over the boom in AI-generated images, which mimics the iconic Japanese animation studio’s signature style.

OpenAI CEO Explains Otherside of AI Art

The controversy started after a clip of Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki went viral, where he appeared to call AI art “an insult to life”. While some people argue that the video was misrepresented, it helped the debate go mainstream.

“It doesn’t mean that it [AI-generated art] doesn’t cause some job loss, and some people who had a sort of differential ability to do something now have a lot more competition. But overall I think it’s a real benefit to society,” Altman admitted.

The introduction of GPT-4o’s image generator within ChatGPT has led to the creation of over 700 million images, according to OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap. Altman expects the billion-image milestone to be crossed “in the not-too-distant future.”

However, there are concerns about AI models that may be trained on copyrighted works without consent. It effectively allows these models to compete with the very artists they learn from.

Sam Altman said,“The thing that’s been exciting to me is just the breadth of creative use cases. […] There’s obviously a lot of great commercial use cases too where people are using this for their small businesses to generate new logos or graphic designs.”
