OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Clarifies Phased Rollout of GPT-4.5

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Announces Phased Rollout of GPT-4.5

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared an update on the company’s latest large language model, GPT-4.5, which is expected to be gradually launched to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Altman shared a thread on rollout strategy through a phased approach to ensure stability and optimal user experience.

Sam Altman Clarifies GPT-4.5’s Phased Launch

Altman explained that launching GPT-4.5 with a low rate limit would greatly restrict user engagement. It makes meaningful interactions difficult. Instead, OpenAI has opted for a staggered release, allowing for more extended and substantive conversations with the model. Albeit, it requires some users to wait a bit longer.

“We are likely going to roll out GPT-4.5 to the plus tier over a few days. There is no perfect way to do this; we wanted to do it for everyone tomorrow, but it would have meant we had to launch with a very low rate limit. We think people are gonna use this a lot and love it,” said Altman.

He also clarified the decision, stating “So we think it’s better to let people have real, long conversations with it, but that means we have to stagger people in rather than have everyone hit it hard at the same time. Hope that makes sense and look forward to seeing your feedback!”

In addition to discussing the rollout, Altman took a moment to praise the OpenAI team’s achievements. He referred to the company’s advancements as “perhaps the most impressive scientific/technical breakthrough of recent decades.”

However, in a deeply personal moment, Altman reflected on his priorities, sharing: “Thought that was the thing I’d always be most proud of in life. Turns out I am now more proud of a preemie baby for learning how to eat on his own.”

This update comes after OpenAI’s recent announcement that GPT-4.5 will be the last iteration before the company moves away from chain-of-thought prompting, which is a technique that simulates human reasoning by breaking tasks into sequential steps.
