OpenAI is preparing to roll out a preview of its latest language model, GPT-4.5, to select users. A notification in the ChatGPT Android app suggests that the new model will initially be accessible to those subscribed to the Plus and Pro plans.
Early Glimpses of OpenAI’s GPT-4.5
Speculation about GPT-4.5 first arose in late 2023 when references to the model name appeared in ChatGPT conversations. More recently, OpenAI has notified users of an opportunity to test its “newest and largest model,” reinforcing the idea that a public preview is imminent.
There are indications that GPT-4.5 could eventually replace GPT-4o as the standard model available to free-tier users. The new version is expected to offer increased call limits, potentially enhancing accessibility and functionality for non-paying users.
Exclusive Features for Pro Subscribers
OpenAI’s Pro subscription, priced at $200 per month, provides users with fewer restrictions compared to the $20-per-month Plus plan. Those enrolled in the Pro tier are expected to receive early access to GPT-4.5, benefiting from improved capabilities and fewer usage limitations.
In addition to the new model release, OpenAI is refining the ChatGPT web interface. Researcher Tibor Blaho has observed that several tools, including Deep Research, Canvas, and image uploads, have been repositioned in a streamlined interface aimed at making model selection and feature access more intuitive.
A notable improvement is the enhanced Deep Research mode, which now allows users to specify sources, topics of interest, and upload relevant files. These additions are expected to improve the model’s ability to generate detailed analytical reports.
Alongside GPT-4.5, OpenAI has introduced o3-mini, a model designed to optimize reasoning while keeping token usage low. This model is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to previous iterations, such as o1, without compromising performance.
OpenAI continues to face strong competition from rival AI developers. Google’s Gemini Flash Thinking model and DeepSeek R1 have emerged as notable alternatives, offering competitive pricing and performance. With these developments, the AI industry remains highly dynamic as companies strive to improve efficiency and accessibility.
