Hong Kong, November 4, 2024 – In a move that strengthens their relationship, OPPO and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) disclosed today that they will further ramp up the current partnership by establishing the PolyU-OPPO Joint Innovation Research Centre with a commitment to RMB 30 million in funding over the next five years.
The partnership, which was officially signed on the campus of PolyU on November 1, enhances the existing Joint Innovation Lab inaugurated in 2022 into a full-fledged research center. The objective of the project is to facilitate the advancement of AI imaging technology and to boost the innovation ecosystem within the Greater Bay Area.
“In the three years of collaboration between OPPO and PolyU, we have witnessed significant technological breakthroughs and notable achievements in talent cultivation through the Joint Lab,” said Jason LIAO, President of OPPO Research Institute, emphasizing the company’s commitment to academia-industry integration.
PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG highlighted the strategic timing of the partnership:
“To address the opportunities and challenges of the AI era, PolyU will officially establish the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences in January 2025.”
In this reconfiguration, the new Joint Innovation Research Centre will be accommodated under the Department of Computing.
The existing partnership has already produced several accomplishments, most notable being the AI super-resolution technology and HDR imaging algorithms embedded in some of OPPO’s devices. The enhanced partnership will have a stronger focus on Image Restoration, Detail Enhancement through Generative Modeling, and Interactive Image and Video Editing.
Moreover, the funding will increase the number of PhD and post-doctoral students further reinforcing the talent base for AI imaging evolution in the Greater Bay Area. The Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU Prof. Christopher CHAO and Mr. Zheng QIN in charge of Industry-Academia Affairs from OPPO have both signed the deal.
