Flash News (Warsaw, September 26, 2024): PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and Ericsson have embarked on a trial of a cutting-edge 5 G-based Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) in Poland. This pioneering project, which runs until 2027, aims to radically enhance the safety as well as the operational efficiency of railway communications.
The trial will commence at the Railway Institute’s Żmigród facility starting in 2024. Ericsson’s Martin Mellor stated,
“FRMCS is key in the modernization of the European railways since it provides capabilities for high degree of monitoring and control, as well as plenty of data exchange.”
PKP’s Piotr Kubicki also agreed, saying,
“This cooperation is a turning point in the development of Poland’s advanced railways.”
Data concerning the routes and mobile terminal evolved supervision and control between train operators, train stations, and control centers with the GSM-R systems, which were then interfaced. The system will enable more advanced modes of rail operations in conjunction with the use of predictive maintenance ensuring improved and safer travel for passengers as well as for freight.
This collaboration further portrays Poland as an emerging technology hub in Europe as it seeks to be at the forefront of the railway digitalization phase. In line with the initiative, the newly developed system will enhance organizational performance and facilitate the adoption of independent and intelligent rail transport systems, which will transform the transport system in the country.
The complete implementation is anticipated to increase the level of reliability of communications and will also aid in achieving the broader European railway modernization agenda.
