Prime global recording companies file lawsuits against AI startups

Certain big-time players in the recording industry are filing charges against two startups engaged in artificial intelligence (AI) for breaching copyright rules. They also include Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Records. Their allegation is that the two companies, Suno and Udio, have bypassed copyright rules, engaging in high-level malpractice.

The recording companies continue to assert that the startups’ software is capable of appropriating their original compositions and treating them as their own. Each plundered composition is entitled to $150,000 in compensation.

The Recording Industry Association of America revealed this information regarding the filing of lawsuits, along with more verticals going up against AI-based companies for similar offenses.

Suno, a Massachusetts-based AI company, came out with its initial item in 2023 and credits itself for having over 10 million individuals utilize its tools for creating music. Suno has partnered with Microsoft and recently secured $125 million in investments.

On the other hand, Udio is New York-based, also going by the name Uncharted Labs, and is supported by VC investors like Andreessen Horowitz. The company delivered its application a short while back and came under the limelight for being the instrument behind the creation of BBL Drizzy, basically a parody based track.

According to AI companies, they are not engaging in any illegal activities because copyright creations, such as news and satire, can be used without requiring any certification. According to their logic, machine learning with AI tools is similar to humans parroting previous writings.

However, the recording companies disagree, emphasizing that the AI companies are making money by replicating their original creations. They fear that the entire musical fraternity is under threat. Added to this are big-time artists such as Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj, who have taken up cudgels too.
