Renesas Expands AI MPU Line with RZ/V2N for Intelligent Endpoint Devices

NUREMBERG, Germany and TOKYO, Japan – The development of the RZ/V2N microprocessor for the vision AI application spectrum is yet another stage in broadened applicability of Renesas’ RZ/V series. The RZ/V2N integrates Renesas’ proprietary DRP-AI3 accelerator and delivers power efficiency of 10 TOPS/W and it also offers up to 15 TOPS for AI inference. The new MPU achieves this capability by advanced pruning technology, reducing the size of the system and eliminating most of the costs due to working without cooling fans in the machine.

It is packaged in a small 15mm-square package thereby occupying 38% less area compared to the most expensive RZ/V2H. This MPU also features a quad-core Arm Cortex-A55, a Cortex-M33, as well as an Arm Mali-C55 ISP together with two MIPI cameras interfaces for better spatial recognition and motion analysis intended for improved applications in traffic monitoring, visual inspection systems, and smart surveillance.

“Since launching the RZ/V2H last year to target next-generation robotics requiring vision AI and real-time control, we have received tremendous interest in using the Renesas DRP-AI accelerator,” said Daryl Khoo, VP of Embedded Processing at Renesas.

“With the addition of the RZ/V2N, sharing the same lineage as the RZ/V2H, we are extending our reach to address mid-range applications, particularly endpoint vision AI that does not need to be realized with power hungry designs. I am excited that our customers will be able to select the best AI MPU from Renesas that meets their system and budget requirements.”

The RZ/V2N will be presented to the public from 11 to 13 March 2025 at embedded world in Nuremberg, Germany. This MPU will be available from March 19 through Renesas and authorized distributors.

“Vision AI applications across markets including smart city, enterprise and industrial are broad and varied, but all demand sustained performance and efficient processing,” said Paul Williamson, senior vice president and general manager, IoT Line of Business at Arm.

“Renesas’ new RZ/V2N MPU leverages the leading-edge capabilities of the Arm compute platform to deliver against the performance and efficiency needs of next generation vision AI use cases.”
