Seoul, South Korea – The R&D wing of the leading telecommunication operator in Japan, KDDI research, inc. and Samsung Electronics have officially collaborated to push research and development in AI for next-generation mobile networks. The two companies signed an MoU in February 2025 with the understanding to collaborate on Artificial Intelligence in mobile communication while focusing on Distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) technology.
As the pace accelerates on 6G standardization, innovation in artificial intelligence has a transformational impact on the performance of networks. The two companies are embarking on efforts to leverage AI in improving MIMO technologies for increased transmission speeds and extended coverage using several antennas for simultaneous transmission and reception of signals. Unlike traditional MIMO systems which are confined to a single-cell working environment, D-MIMO systems are essentially multi-cell systems that allow enhanced coverage and stretch performance limitations.
This collaboration between Samsung and KDDI Research will lead to the deployment of AI-based technologies to enhance the design and operation of D-MIMO, and eventually will enable faster than before speeds and improved network capacity. This research is likely to play a vital role in developing a user-centric 6G network with good wireless performance.
“The joint research with KDDI Research will play an integral role in innovating wireless telecommunications through the convergence of telecommunications and AI technologies,” said Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, CTO of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics and Head of Samsung Research. “We will lead the next-generation communication research that brings improvements to user experience.”
In addition to that, Samsung is actively engaging global industry alliances such as the AI-RAN Alliance and the Next G Alliance (NGA) to promote the adoption of AI-powered innovations into mobile networks. The Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit in November 2024 promoted collaboration with other industries. The 6G Samsung White paper was also released this February, in which the plans towards AI-native and sustainable communication technologies were laid down.
“I anticipate that our research collaboration will highlight the critical role of AI and D-MIMO in developing a user-centric network that delivers exceptional wireless quality across the target area, ultimately creating new value in 6G,” said Hajime Nakamura, President and CEO of KDDI Research, Inc.
Future mobile telecommunications will be shaped by the role of AI in such partnerships, offering much faster, much smarter, and much more efficient 6G networks.
