SKT and Samsung Deploy AI to Transform 5G Network Performance

SEOUL, South Korea, October 28, 2024 – SK Telecom (SKT) and Samsung Electronics have jointly declared a successful milestone in the enhancement of 5G networks by deploying artificial intelligence technology for commercial networks. This partnership represents another step forward in the management of technologies for telecommunications infrastructure.

After a year of work, the joint effort produced an AI-RAN Parameter Recommender system, which is an intelligent network that improves the performance of a particular base station based on a given area.

“This technology represents a fundamental shift in how we manage network infrastructure,” says Kim Jin-woo, Head of Network Operations at SKT.

The system addresses the challenging variation in 5G service quality across different locations by utilizing deep learning algorithms to analyze historical network data.

“Our AI model significantly improves resource allocation efficiency while enabling broad-scale network optimization,” explains Park Sung-hyun, Senior Vice President of Network Solutions at Samsung Electronics.

Early use cases yielded good outcomes in areas with a concentrated population, mainly subway systems where reliable signal coverage has proven problematic. The system dynamically balances the transmission power and reconfiguration settings to counteract interference along problematic signal areas.

SKT has also confirmed plans to expand the system’s capabilities to include beamforming optimization and real-time applications.

“We’re seeing unprecedented improvements in network performance through this AI-driven approach,” notes Lee Min-ho, Technical Director at SKT’s Network Innovation Center.

The collaboration goes beyond base station optimization, ands contains various telecommunications applications including network power reduction, Telco Edge AI, and operational automation, positioning both, Samsung and SK Tellecom, as pioneers of AI-enhanced telecommunications infrastructure.
