Atsugi, Japan and Cambridge, UK – 30th September 2024 – Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, and Raspberry Pi Ltd. join forces to launch the innovative Raspberry Pi AI Camera, a breakthrough in AI edge computing. Being priced competitively at $70, this innovative AI camera will integrate seamlessly with Raspberry Pi circuit boards, making AI-powered image processing more accessible to developers.
A global pioneer in image sensors, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation’s partnership with Raspberry Pi Ltd. aims to transform computer vision using edge computing solutions. With its smooth integration with Raspberry Pi’s line of single-board computers, the Raspberry Pi AI Camera can process massive visual data on the edge using the state-of-the-art IMX500 intelligent vision sensor. The AI Camera will be offered by Raspberry Pi’s network of authorized resellers from the 30th of September.
The partnership stemmed from Sony Semiconductor Solutions’s minority investment in Raspberry Pi Ltd in April 2023. By leveraging Sony’s IMX500 intelligent vision sensor, the AI Camera can eliminate the need for large GPUs or accelerators by handling AI image processing on-chip. With just Raspberry Pi boards and the AI Camera, the offering will simplify how developers and enthusiasts create AI solutions without the complexity of typical edge and AI hardware. The AI camera also boasts a 12.3MP IMX500 sensor with embedded neural network firmware, integrated RP2040 for neural network firmware management, an in-built MobileNetSSD model and compatibility with all Raspberry Pi models.
The large developer community of Raspberry Pi is excited to get access to cutting-edge AI sensing and processing technology, according to Eita Yanagisawa, the General Manager of System Solutions at SSS, who also noted that this is just the start of their strategic cooperation. This excitement was mirrored by Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi Ltd., who highlighted the diverse potential applications of AI-powered image processing. He also said, “We look forward to seeing what our community members are able to achieve using the power of the Raspberry Pi AI Camera.”
