Springer Nature Integrates AI Tool to Trace Fake Citations

Springer Nature Integrates AI Tool to Trace Fake Citations

The German–British academic publishing company, Springer Nature, has introduced a new in-house artificial intelligence tool to detect irrelevant references in academic journals and books.

The new tool will be deployed across the publisher’s vast portfolio of journals and books. It will help the publication to flag “unethical or misleading” research at an early stage. Through this new approach, they can maintain the credibility of scholarly literature.

Springer Nature Builds Digital Front Line With AI Tools

The AI-based irrelevant reference checker tool will work alongside existing tools like Geppetto (To identify AI-generated content) and SnappShot (to identify irrelevant images). The integration will help Springer Nature to build a digital front line to counter the rising tide of fake or compromised scientific research.

Chris Graf, Director of Research Integrity at Springer Nature, said that the irrelevant reference checker tool will add another layer of scrutiny. He said, “As the use of AI to generate fake research papers becomes more effective, reference checking provides a key opportunity to identify these unethical efforts.  The addition of this tool to our existing checks will help us to catch many unethical submissions that would otherwise progress to take up editors’ and peer reviewers’ time.”

It can scan submitted journals and books to assess the relevance of each reference cited. If multiple citations are flagged as irrelevant, the submission will be reviewed manually by Springer Nature’s Research Integrity Group (RIG). The authority with the human layer will ensure a human layer of judgment remains central to the process.

The AI tool has been passed through a different level of testing and validation to ensure its smooth functionality amid the changing dynamics of research. While AI is capable of identifying anomalies, however, Graf believes that human oversight will remain essential.

Graf said, “Fake research is a challenge that affects the entire publishing industry and is something that Springer Nature will not tolerate.  From creating AI tools, to building a now 50-strong expert research integrity unit, to developing our employees’ and editors’ expertise through training, we are absolutely committed to ensuring the robustness of published research for researchers to build upon.”
