Supermicro, a global leader in IT solutions, unveiled its latest offering to cash in on the AI hardware hype. Following up on the successful Supermicro X14 servers introduced in June 2024, the company has previewed its revamped variant claiming many never-before-seen features, hoping to attract businesses with mission-critical workloads in AI and high-performance computing.
The new X14 server platform features support for 256 performance cores (P-cores) that can significantly optimize AI and computing workloads by reducing the time and cost of large-scale AI training. It also offers memory support for MRDIMM with 8800MT/s, a key investment for businesses working on high-performance computing tasks.
Supermicro has timed the update of its server platform to meet the ever-increasing need for AI compute. Its new system architecture is specifically built for large-scale AI applications, including training AI models, building large language models (LLMs), and leveraging generative AI and virtualization. The new X14 platform is also expected to increase AI efficiencies while reducing costs incurred during AI model training and inferencing.
Ryan Tabrah, VP and GM of Xeon 6 at Intel, a key partner of Supermicro, highlighted the significance of the revamped X14 servers, “Our ongoing partnership with Supermicro will lead to some of the most powerful systems in the industry in line with the ever-increasing demands of modern AI and high-performance computing.” He further stated, “This provides new levels of performance for AI and compute-intensive workloads.”
Yet, the move comes days after Supermicro announced it would delay the filing of its annual report for the fiscal year. The company recently made headlines for accusations of accounting irregularities, issues with undisclosed related party transactions, sanctions and even export control failures. This led to its ticker SMCI falling 19% on Wednesday’s session, capping a 26.55% plunge this week over five trading days.
