SOUTHPORT, Australia, October 23, 2024 – Telstra and Ericsson have made outstanding progress in the 5G space, having recorded the historical figure of uplink speeds of 447 Mbps in a sub-6GHz 5G Standalone network, crossing the previously set record of 100 Mbps.
This record-breaking milestone was reached in the live commercial network at Telstra’s Southport Innovation Centre and represents an important progression in terms of 5G technology capabilities, especially in areas with demand for extreme data upload speed, such as live broadcasting and video calls.
“Our continued work with Ericsson to push the boundaries of 5G uplink speeds highlights our commitment to providing the best possible network experiences for our customers,” said Sri Amirthalingam, Telstra Wireless Engineering Executive.
“The 447 Mbps record achieved on our 5G Standalone network at Southport represents a significant leap forward in what is possible with 5G.“
The breakthrough employed Two Frequency Division Duplex carriers each of 40 MHz from the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands using carrier aggregation technology. This is in addition to their earlier collaboration with Qualcomm this year which achieved uplink speeds of 340 Mbps.
“The latest achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between Ericsson and Telstra and our shared vision of advancing 5G to its full potential,” stated Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand.
This achievement marks another step closer to Telstra’s ambition of moving all traffic onto 5G SA platforms which promises increased efficiency and an improved customer experience. The achievement validates the potential of future networks, particularly in areas with access to specific spectrum bands.
The innovation is expected to favorably transform many industries like medicine, production, and supply chain management while accommodating high-definition live online viewing and enterprise applications in the digital age.
