Tencent Introduces Hunyuan Turbo S; Outpaces DeepSeek-R1

Tencent Introduces Hunyuan Turbo S; Outpaces DeepSeek-R1

Chinese tech giant Tencent has launched its latest AI model, Hunyuan Turbo S, which it claims delivers responses faster than the globally acclaimed DeepSeek-R1.

Tencent Competes In Global AI Race

With the launch, Tencent is joining the growing competition among China’s top AI firms that intensified after DeepSeek-R1’s introduction.

In a statement, Tencent revealed Turbo S’s ability to generate answers in under a second, setting it apart from models like DeepSeek-R1 and Hunyuan T1, which “need to think for a while before responding.”

The announcement comes amid an escalating AI arms race in China. Last month, Alibaba introduced Qwen 2.5-Max, claiming that it surpasses DeepSeek-V3 in overall performance.

DeepSeek’s meteoric rise triggered ripple effects in the global AI market, leading to a massive sell-off of AI stocks worldwide. For instance, Nvidia lost nearly $600 billion in market value in a single session in late January, raising concerns about its future sustainability.

Tencent further revealed that Turbo S offers dramatically lower usage costs compared to its previous versions. This shift shows the impact of DeepSeek’s aggressive open-source and low-cost pricing strategy, which has compelled industry leaders to rethink their monetization models.

While new AI models are being developed daily, AI startups like OpenAI, Anthropic, and others have accelerated their developments.
