Trump Signs Executive Order to Revoke Previous Govt AI Policy

In the latest development, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday. The order aims to revoke “certain existing AI policies and directives that act as barriers to American AI innovation.”

The latest executive order revokes key provisions of the Biden administration’s policy of prioritizing economic competitiveness and national security over what Trump describes as “engineered social agendas.”

It comes just days after former President Joe Biden’s 2023 AI directive was canceled. The directive mandated that federal agencies ensure AI tools do not harm the public. The new order directs a comprehensive review of all AI-related policies, regulations, and directives rolled out under Biden.

Trump’s Executive Order on AI Development: What It Says

The order reads: “We must develop AI systems that are free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas. With the right Government policies, we can solidify our position as the global leader in AI and secure a brighter future for all Americans.”

It aligns with concerns raised by Trump and his allies, including tech mogul Elon Musk, about so-called ‘woke AI’.

The new policy requires federal agencies to revise existing AI procurement guidelines within 60 days, replacing Biden-era rules with a framework that supports AI innovation while ensuring national security.

The order also assigns a new AI action plan, to be developed within 180 days, under the leadership of a select group of White House technology and science officials. A key figure in this initiative is venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks, whom Trump has appointed as the Special Advisor for AI and Crypto.

Biden’s 2023 order has required AI developers working on powerful models to disclose key details to the federal government before releasing their technologies. With Trump’s repeal, that mandate is now void, raising questions about how AI safety and ethical considerations will be addressed moving forward.
