Albany, New York, United States – 11th October 2024 – The State University of New York, also called the University at Albany, completed the construction of its powerful new AI supercomputer. Developed using Nvidia’s DGX platform, the AI supercomputer is among the most computationally advanced systems across all U.S. universities.
NVIDIA DGX, a cutting-edge enterprise AI solution built to handle complex AI tasks, powers the AI system. It is capable of processing massive data sets with efficiency and speed by performing parallel computations. The move will give student researchers access to AI computing resources, promoting research for the public good.

The post was accompanied by a 3-minute video from the University of Albany, highlighting the support from key university officials, government authorities, industry experts and others. The video’s description mentioned that the intent behind building the AI supercomputer was “to advance the public good” by making AI computing accessible to more researchers.
University of Albany’s move to use Nvidia hardware solidifies the AI leader’s position as a key player in democratizing AI computing resources. Brian Heaton, an alumni and Chief Information Officer of UAlbany highlighted that it is the only university among public colleges and universities in New York to have the “24-node, 5 petabyte storage Nvidia system.”
Havidan Rodriguez, the President of the University at Albany, said about the AI supercomputer in the video,
“This is a major step forward for the University at Albany. We are national leaders, so when these discussions about AI started emerging we wanted to take the lead.”
Moreover, the university boasts AI Plus, a collaboration with IBM and NVIDIA to integrate AI into academic and research programs. The completion of UAlbany’s Nvidia-powered AI supercomputer underscores the importance of high-performance computing and AI computing in academic research.
