London – The UK has revealed a transformational AI Action Plan that will help drive economic growth, improve public services, and establish the nation as a global leader in artificial intelligence. The plan has already secured £14 billion in investments from tech giants Vantage Data Centres, Kyndryl, and Nscale, set to create 13,250 jobs and accelerate the UK’s AI infrastructure development.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the revolutionary potential of AI, stating, “Artificial Intelligence will drive incredible change in our country. From teachers personalizing lessons to supporting small businesses with their record-keeping to speeding up planning applications, it has the potential to transform the lives of working people.”
“But the AI industry needs a government that is on their side, one that won’t sit back and let opportunities slip through its fingers. Our plan will make Britain the world leader. It will give the industry the foundation it needs and will turbocharge the Plan for Change. That means more jobs and investment in the UK, more money in people’s pockets, and transformed public services.”
The AI Growth Zones plan involves creating these zones on a trial basis, the first of which will take off at Culham, Oxfordshire, to streamline planning permissions and power AI infrastructure development. Secretary for Science, Innovation, and Technology Peter Kyle highlighted, “This government is determined that the UK is not left behind in the global race for AI, that’s why the actions we commit to will ensure that the benefits are spread throughout the UK so all citizens will reap the rewards of the bet we make today. This is how we’re putting our Plan for Change in motion.“
One of the key projects includes a supercomputer, which will increase computing power by 20 times by 2030, essential for high-powered AI applications. Alongside this, they have also introduced the National Data Library, which is a potential safe harbor used to unlock the immense value residing in public data. The government assumes that implementing these technologies would increase productivity by 1.5% every year, contributing up to £47 billion in terms of growth that can be realized annually across the economy within the next decade.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, added, “AI is a powerful tool that will help grow our economy, make our public services more efficient, and open up new opportunities to help improve living standards. This action plan is the government’s modern industrial strategy in action. Attracting AI businesses to the UK, bringing in new investment, creating new jobs, and turbocharging our Plan for Change. This means better living standards in every part of the United Kingdom and working people have more money in their pocket.”
Vantage Data Centres will commit £12 billion to develop the area and establish substantial data centers with 11,500 new job opportunities. Kyndryl will set up 1,000 jobs related to artificial intelligence at a tech hub in Liverpool. The UK’s largest sovereign AI data center is planned to be built by Nscale by 2026 with an investment of $2.5 billion.
Darren Hardman, CEO of Microsoft UK, remarked, “The scale of this government’s ambition for AI development and adoption in the UK is exactly what’s needed to drive economic growth, transform public services, and create new opportunities for all. Maintaining the UK’s position as a global leader in AI demands innovation and investment across the public and private sectors and Microsoft is fully committed to helping make this vision a reality.”
This comprehensive action plan underscores the UK’s ambition to harness AI’s potential, with updates expected as its measures are implemented.
