London, November 19, 2024 – The UK government has today revealed the commencement of the second iteration of the Manchester Prize, an overarching project targeted at utilizing artificial intelligence to transform clean energy systems. The competition provides monetary support to innovators residing in the UK, where the overall winner is awarded with the sum of 1 million British pounds to put into practice, any concepts related to reducing the carbon footprint of the country’s energy structure.
This announcement was made during the COP29 Conference – held in Azerbaijan – is directed towards showing that the UK is serious about making major reductions in emissions by 2050. The contest intends to support the development of up to 10 innovative projects, with each receiving an initial grant of £100,000 before a final grand prize winner is chosen.
“AI can transform our public services, make us more productive, and tackle some of the biggest shared challenges in society,” said Minister for AI Feryal Clark. “The second round of the Manchester Prize will bring brilliant British innovation to bear to deliver a clean, secure energy future for the UK.”
The competition is looking for inventive ways to solve problems in different sectors, such as increasing the effectiveness of wind and solar farms, addressing energy management at home, and creating energy demand forecasting systems. Partnerships with organizations outside the UK are permitted as long as they involve British organizations.
“The greatest long-term challenge we face is the climate and nature crisis: that’s why we have our world-leading targets to decarbonize the electricity grid by 2030 and to reach net zero by 2050,” explained Professor Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. “We need an ambitious approach to using artificial intelligence across the development, engineering, and operation of our energy systems.”
The competition, which will end on January 17, 2025, is part of the UK’s continuous effort of providing support to AI-powered solutions for the last Societal challenges for the past decade. This is in line with the recent Manchester Prize- a competition focusing on energy, environment, and infrastructure that has been successfully concluded.
