Amid the explosive growth in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, the UK is preparing itself to become a global leader by actively pursuing increased investment from the U.S. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle is currently in the United States, where he mentioned the country’s potential as a crucial location for AI revolution and growth.
While addressing NVIDIA’s annual conference in San Jose on March 20, Kyle revealed the UK’s plan to “rewire” its economy around AI. The plan aims to extend AI-driven benefits beyond traditional hubs like London and Silicon Valley. This approach will help the country to empower communities across the UK.
Kyle mentioned how AI can be used to enhance public services and attract economic growth, which aligns with the government’s “Plan for Change.”
The UK’s AI sector, currently valued at over $92 billion, is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2035. Kyle mentioned that this growth places the UK as the second largest AI nation among democratic countries, which offers lucrative opportunities for US companies and investors.
One of the crucial components of this strategy is the establishment of “AI Growth Zones”. It is a designated area designed to attract large-scale AI investment through rationalized regulation and advanced infrastructure. These areas aim to transform abandoned industrial sites and underutilized power sources into vibrant AI innovation hubs.
At the NVIDIA conference, Kyle stated, “In empty factories and abandoned mines, in derelict sites and unused power supplies, I see the places where we can begin to build a new economic model. A model completely rewired around the immense power of artificial intelligence.
He added further, “Where faced with that power, the state is neither a blocker nor a shirker—but an agile, proactive partner. In Britain, we want to turn the relics of economic eras past into AI Growth Zones.”
Kyle is expected to stress that these AI Growth Zones will enable the rapid development of high-powered compute infrastructure. The government has already received numerous proposals from local leaders and industry stakeholders eager to leverage AI to revitalize their communities.
