UPMC Central Pa. Integrates AI Technology to Treat Aortic

The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Central Pennsylvania is taking a big leap forward by introducing advanced AI-powered technology to treat life-threatening aortic disease.

Unlike other sectors, AI is also making a wave in the healthcare sector. The integration of AI technology makes UPMC the first and only institution in Pennsylvania and one of just eight in the U.S. to use this cutting-edge technology.

The aorta is the largest artery in the human body, responsible for carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When issues like aortic aneurysms, aneurysms, dissection, stenosis, and aortic valve disease occur, they can be fatal if stay untreated for long.

How AI Will Provide Extra Hands to HPMC Surgeons

With the collaboration between Cydar Medical and Medtronic. UPMC is using AI-powered software that prepares a detailed 3D map of a patient’s vascular system. The technology helps doctors in three different ways: before surgery, guiding during surgery, and reviewing after surgery.

“At UPMC, we strive to always provide innovative, high-quality care to improve patient outcomes continuously,” stated David Loran, M.D., chief of cardiac and vascular surgery at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Central PA. “Such technological advancements enable us to identify and treat vascular issues more accurately and efficiently. It’s very exciting to be leading the way in what is seen as the future of aortic surgery.”

With AI’s integration, the surgical process now can become more precise and reduce the risks of failure. Traditional surgeries can be complicated and may expose patients to high levels of radiation during imaging. With AI’s integration, the danger of radiation can greatly be lowered, ensuring safety. Furthermore, doctors can also collaborate across different hospitals to find out the best possible care.
