Speaking at the AI summit in Paris, Vance emphasized that AI would serve as a tool to improve efficiency rather than eliminate jobs. “And I appreciate PM Modi’s point. AI, I really believe, will facilitate and make people more productive. It is not going to replace human beings. It will never replace human beings,” he said. He also criticized the prevailing concerns in the tech industry regarding AI displacing workers, stating, “Too many of the leaders in the AI industry, when they talk about this fear of replacing workers, I think they really missed the point.”
During his address at the summit, Modi highlighted that historical trends suggest technological advancements do not lead to job losses but rather transform the nature of work. He urged investment in training and skill development to prepare for an AI-driven world. “Loss of jobs is AI’s most feared disruption. But history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology. Its nature changes and new types of jobs are created,” Modi stated. “We need to invest in skilling and reskilling our people for an AI-driven future.”
Modi also outlined AI’s potential in key sectors, saying it could bring significant improvements in healthcare, education, and agriculture. He emphasized that AI should be leveraged to accelerate progress toward sustainable development goals. “We must pool together resources and talent. We must develop open-source systems that enhance trust and transparency. We must build quality data sets, free from biases. We must democratize technology and create people-centric applications,” the prime minister stated.
Vance, while addressing concerns about AI regulations in Europe, cautioned that overly strict measures could hinder technological progress. He warned that excessive regulatory interventions might limit AI’s potential and slow down innovation.
The summit also marked the first official meeting between Vance and Modi since the U.S. vice president took office. Both leaders appeared comfortable and engaged in discussions, signaling a willingness to strengthen ties between their nations. Images from their meeting showed them in a relaxed setting, reinforcing the growing partnership between the two largest democracies.
