October 23, 2024, London, UK – Vodafone, Qualcomm, and Ericsson have pointed out their mmWave 5G trials in two hot scenarios in the UK. These trials represent a great advancement in the mobile and broadband experience but will be impactful in poorly served areas such as congested sites and remote European Union home broadband installations.
During the trials peak rates of 4 Gbps were reached in the English town of Newbury during Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) tests, securing positive prospects for future business opportunities in specific strategic fields for improved customer satisfaction.
So, now it is possible to cover the home using this method of transmitting broadband without the requirement of fiber-fanned materials or other technologies previously deemed essential.
A second trial where there were 20,000 people in a London soccer field enabled reaching peak download speeds of the order of 2.8 Gbps, even with the network busy.
Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone UK, said:
“While mmWave is a niche technology for mobile network operators in the UK, the uplift to customer experience will be incredible. With installations on a small number of sites, millions of people could benefit multiple times per week. “
Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone UK, said:
“This trial demonstrates how we can significantly improve customer experience by strategically targeting today’s challenges.”
According to Dino Flore, Vice President of Technology, Qualcomm, the mmWave technology possesses impressive capabilities.
“The trials depict huge leaps in capacity and speed hence effective and fast connectivity is possible,”
According to Ericssons Chief Technology Officer, Evangelia Tzifa,
“With fiber-like speeds and support for dense traffic environments, mmWave opens the door to advanced connectivity experiences.”
This development demonstrates the opportunities that the implementation of 5G mmWave technology can bring in the solution of mobile traffic overloads in crowded places and fast interconnection within the UK.
