Weekly AI roundup: Apple-Meta partnership, ByteDance's AI chip, and more

This week’s AI news summary highlights the significant advancements in the field of artificial intelligence, including the alleged halt in Apple’s discussions for an innovative collaboration with Meta, which included the integration of Llama 3 into the Apple ecosystem.

Meanwhile, ByteDance is actively developing an ultra-low-voltage 5-nanometer AI chip, with plans for mass production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC). Let’s look at AI’s progress, which is shaping the future. This week’s recap of AI updates showcases the strides made in the realm of intelligence.

Apple opts out of Meta AI integration for iOS 18, reports say

Bloomberg News reported this week that Apple did not go through the reported partnership with Meta Platforms to bring its AI chatbot, Llama, to iPhones. The reason has been reported as ‘privacy concerns’ with Llama. The discussions happened not long after Apple began hashing out agreements to utilize OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet’s Gemini in its items.

Apple introduced its AI strategy in June during the company’s annual developer conference, WWDC, announcing ChatGPT for devices as well as integrating Apple Intelligence into Siri and across a suite of apps. The iPhone 15 Pro will feature an enhanced version of Siri, dubbed Apple Intelligence, that understands users in more nuanced ways. While the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro will see expanded access to this artificial intelligence through iOS 18, which analyzes inputs and can respond to users.

China’s ByteDance is likely to develop a 5-nanometer AI

According to a media report, TikTok parent company ByteDance is working with US firm Broadcom on an AI chip developed using advanced 5-nanometer semiconductor technology. The chip is to be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSMC), which does not break current US export restrictions on chips, reports said. This chip is still in the design stage and isn’t expected to go into production until sometime next year.

The Chinese version of ByteDance has previously bought 12 nm chips, and Bailey switches from Broadcom for AI computers. ByteDance plans to further invest around 2 billion in Nvidia chips as a part of restructuring its business plans.

Meta AI has made its debut in India through platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp

Meta, a US-based company, has introduced its new and more advanced AI assistant, called the Meta AI, to all Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp services in India. Built on Llama 3, Meta AI can help people with everyday activities like work or schoolwork, learning, and creativity tasks. Meta AI, which was announced at Meta Connect last year, has been rolling out globally since April.

The AI’s unique selling point is its one-of-a-kind feature, “Imagine,” which lets people make AI-generated pictures within chats. This feature can also be useful for crafting custom invitations to events or assembling mood boards with interior decorating ideas. Users can also employ prompts to write over existing images or even animate them.

Amazon developing multimodal AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT

Amazon is developing a multimodal AI chatbot called Metis to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This cutting-edge chatbot employs the Amazon Olympus AI model for neuro-creative co-design, which uses both text and images. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is overseeing the project heavily, and it is targeted for a potential launch around September 2024.

The chatbot can easily fetch information from cloud services, like Parrot or the internet itself, with a goal in mind. The findings can then be shared with users without the need for advanced features. This move demonstrates how Amazon is playing for keeps in AI, integrating better and more immersive products into all its services.

Google introduces application for Gemini

Google launched its new AI-powered assistant at the I/O conference; however, now users can access information over the internet with just their voice, as Google has unveiled Gemini, an app that is smart and efficient enough to increase productivity in learning a topic.

With a variety of tools and features, the app provides users with assistance with tasks such as organizing various types of activities and educational pursuits. Features like Gemini’s ability to assist with personal care tasks will significantly simplify regular home tasks and enable users to self-educate by leveraging their AI essence. That app is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to use AI as a way to make life easier for users and offer solutions on an everyday basis.

In closing this week’s recap of AI news, it is apparent that advancements in artificial intelligence are casting a long shadow on the technology landscape. From Apple’s reputed partnership fallout with Meta to ByteDance’s development of a 5-nanometer AI chip to Google unveiling the Gemini app, it is apparent how energetic AI innovation is right now. This reinforces the ongoing progress towards improving AI performance and enhancing its integration into everyday technology. Stay tuned next week for more exciting updates in the world of AI!
