Zscaler Report Over 200 Malicious Apps on Google Play Store Affect 8 Million Devices

San Jose, California, -15 October 2024 — Zscaler’s 2024 Mobile, IoT, and OT Threat Report exposits the grave threats in cybersecurity plaguing the different industries including more than 200 malicious apps present on Google Play Store and distributed over 8 million installs.

It is an alarming number that comes off the back of a 111% growth of spyware and a 29% growth of banking malware called the rapid evolution of threats against mobile and IoT devices.

“Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting legacy exposed assets which often act as a beachhead to IoT & OT environments, resulting in data breaches and ransomware attacks,”

Said Deepen Desai, Chief Security Officer at Zscaler.

“Mobile malware and AI-driven vishing attacks adds to that list making it critical for CISOs and CIOs to prioritize an AI-powered zero trust solution to shut down attack vectors of all kinds safeguarding against these attacks.”

The report emphasizes that Technology, Education, and Manufacturing have emerged as the most targeted industries with the Education Sector increasing it made blocked transactions up by a whopping 136% in comparison to last year.

Manufacturing still bears the brunt of IoT malware attacks as the sector with the highest number of such attacks accounts for 36% of all observed IoT malware blocks from Zscaler.

More statistics show the same trend – the United States is still the number one destination for IoT cyberattacks, with 81% of all IoT traffic routed to American networks.

At the same time India is the largest target for mobile malware, the US, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands are under considerable stress too.

Zscaler’s report implements a clear concern when it comes to organizations integrating their mobile, IoT and OT systems – cyberattacks are getting more advanced and will seek out insufficient endpoints and this is the reason why there should be a full lean towards an AI based zero trust architecture.
